WATER WOES: Residents of Vengamedu in Karur staging a road roko on Wednesday.
KARUR: Residents of Vengamedu area in Inam Karur Municipality of Karur town staged a road roko with empty pots on Wednesday demanding regular water supply in their region. Traffic was disrupted in the area for over two hours. Peeved at the erratic water supply, residents of several wards in the Inam Karur Municipality took to the streets after their repeated pleas for regular drinking water supply fell on deaf ears. Men women and children brandishing empty plastic pots occupied the road near the Vengamedu bus stop. Vengamedu Inspector Mohandoss and other police personnel pleaded with them to disperse. The crowd, numbering 400 dispersed but regrouped in another area and staged a road roko. Karur RDO R. Seethalakshmi held talks with the protestors. The public said that they were getting drinking water only for two days in a month and that too only for a couple of hours. The water being supplied was polluted. They wanted illegal tap connection numbering over 100 attached to the water mains disconnected so that free flow of water was ensured to 10,000 families.
