Two more wells need to be dug: panchayat president Ten borewells have not yielded desired results JOLARPET: Residents of Chinnavepampattu village panchayat, in addition to the sweltering heat, have to put up with another serious problem — water. The panchayat has not yet found a solution to the drinking water crisis here, as it is pondering over best possible options to augment water supply in the area. M. Dhandapani, president, Chinnavepampattu panchayat, said the problem could be solved only if two additional wells were dug in the village. At present, water was supplied on alternate days. The panchayat president has planned to put forward his proposal to the Vellore Collectorate. The written representation would be handed over to Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav by Wednesday. The situation had deteriorated to such an extent that residents of Chinnavepampattu went to neighbouring villages in search of water. This posed serious hardship to women and old people. At present, only two wells that catered to the drinking water requirements of 2,500 people. The water from the wells was pumped into four Over Head Tanks (OHTs) spread across Kuppanavattam, Mettukolai, New Colony, Old Colony and Chinnavepampattu. Mr. Dhandapani said 10 borewells set up at various points within the village panchayat area failed to yield the desired results. Also, a 10,000-litre capacity OHT at Chinnavepampattu was in a dilapidated state. Representations had been sent to the panchayat office and the Water Board for a new OHT of the same capacity, but in vain. Mr. Dhandapani said it had been a long pending demand of the residents to upgrade the existing middle school into high school. A total of 330 students studied at the Chinnavepampattu Panchayat Middle School. The students, after completing their eight standard, had to travel five to six kilometres to go to the high schools at Vaniyambadi and Ponneri. If upgraded, the school would also benefit the students at Chinnakalupalli and Kalandhara. A reason to cheer was that the village panchayat had been included under the “Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam” for the financial year 2008-2009.
