MALAPPURAM: The demand for power fencing of Adivasi colonies in the Nilambur forest has increased in the wake of the escalation of elephant attacks in recent months. The killing of an 11-month-old Adivasi girl by a herd of wild elephants at Thandankallu Colony near Munderi in Vazhikadavu forest range last month had raised the urgency of separating human habitats with power fencing from the wild. New proposals are being made in the first quarter of the fiscal as part of eliminating human-animal clashes in the Nilambur forests. Northern Divisional Forest Officer Sreedharan Nair said Nilambur would definitely get priority in the current fiscal, especially in the wake of the increasing human-animal conflict. The work on power fencing the Chembra tribal colony is currently on with the help of the Pothukal grama panchayat. Power is to be generated from a mini-hydel station to be set up inside the forest for this project. Training camps for children and adults alike have been mooted as part of imparting better awareness about forest and animal life.
