PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said on Wednesday that the government would take steps to modernise the Police Department, increase the number of police personnel and protect their welfare. New buildings for police stations would come up at Orleanpet, Odian Salai, Lawspet, Sedarapet and Mangalam, he said. Inaugurating a building for the Office of the Superintendent of Police (South) and police station at Mettupalayam, he said the government had sought permission from the Central government to increase the strength of police personnel and also to create posts. “The government would like to provide buildings with all facilities for the police stations. Accordingly, new police stations are being constructed at Orleanpet and Odian Salai. The police station at Lawspet will get its own building and we are in the process of selecting the land,” he said. Director-General of Police A.S. Khan said that the department needed all facilities to ensure scientific and technical investigation in the wake of modern gadgets used by the offenders. He also emphasised the need for more manpower.
