KOTTAYAM: The Nair Service Society (NSS) has called upon the State government to reconsider its decision to move ahead with the single window system for admission to higher secondary. In a statement here on Wednesday, NSS general secretary P.K. Narayana Panicker said the system, implemented in Thiruvananthapuram during the last academic year, was a failure and it was not practical. It took four months and seven separate rounds of allotment to complete the procedure, he said. Inordinate delay and confusion had affected academic activities. One of the key reasons for this confusion was that the allotments were done in batches of 60, which included 20 per cent additional seats, instead of 50, which was the actual strength. As a result, students had to move from one school to another during the allotment process. Some of them were forced to abandon their higher secondary studies as they secured admission in far away schools, he said. The increase in the number of seats, without the knowledge of the concerned managements had also affected the infrastructure facilities at the schools, he said. ‘Rectify shortcomings’Mr. Panicker called upon the authorities to rectify the shortcomings in the single window system. The discretionary powers to decide on the need for additional seats should be vested in the managements and the additional seats should also have the component of management quota, he said. The NSS chief also asked the government to empower the respective Principals to spend the amount now being imposed on the students as special fee. These steps should be completed before the commencement of the admission process this year, Mr. Panicker said.
