KOCHI: United Democratic Front convener P.P. Thankachan has urged the State government to look into the charges levelled against the proposed promoters of Travancore Rayons. Talking to presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Thankachan said he supported the government’s move to find promoters for the company considering the interests of the nearly 1,500 workers who became jobless following the closure of the company. However, the responsibility of identifying the promoters was solely on the State government and the Industries Minister. All the trade unions of the company were ready for several compromises and demanded the opening of the company as the plight of the workers ranked high in their minds. The closure of the company had also affected the prosperity of the Perumbavur area as such, he said. Mr. Thankachan’s statement came in the wake of the allegation raised by P.C. George, MLA, regarding the selection of the promoter and the presence of Mr. Thankachan and Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy at some of the meetings convened by the government in this connection. No trade union leaders were invited to the crucial meetings that took the decision regarding the promoters. Only a few LDF MLAs and MPs were present at those meetings. The Opposition leader also did not have any role in finalising the promoter, he said. “I wrote letters to the Chief Minister and the Industries Minister citing media reports which showed the proposed promoters in bad light. The government should take a decision regarding the promoters without any delay as the families are languishing following the closure of the company for years together,” he said.
