Renovation work begins at temple

MADURAI: Improvement work at Thousand Pillar Hall Museum in the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here has commenced with flooring taken up in the first phase.

“Granite stones will be laid on the entire museum premises, which spans 55,000 square feet. The flooring work alone, which commenced on Sunday, will cost Rs. 45 lakh,” B. Raja, Joint Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and Executive Officer of the temple, told The Hindu on Wednesday.

The work is taken up following the recommendation of the Technical Advisory Committee, which was constituted for upgrading the hall into a world class heritage museum. After the flooring work, display of items would be taken up. “The renovation is aimed at making it more visual,” he said.

The items on display would be shifted to wooden cupboards from their present structures. Boards explaining the significance of the items on display would also be kept. Further, additional information about the historical significance of Madurai would also be depicted.

Mr. Raja said that initially flooring would be completed in one section of the museum. The estimated cost of the development work at the museum is Rs.1.55 crore. The entire project cost is being borne by the Tourism Department.

Tourist Officer, K. Dharmaraj, said that this sum was part of Rs. 1.97 crore provided to the Meenakshi temple to carry out restoration of paintings and renovation work at a temple tower and museum. Once completed, the projects would go a long way in attracting more tourists.
