Passengers land at Chennai airport, sans baggage

Baggage system failure at Heathrow blamed

200 missing bags arrived on a later flight on Tuesday

More than 100 passengers will have to wait until Wednesday

CHENNAI: More than 200 passengers on a British Airways flight from London arrived here late on Monday night to a nasty surprise — none of their bags had made it on board their flight.

The incident was a result of a baggage system failure at London Heathrow’s Terminal Four, which resulted in bags not making it on board several departing flights. Flight BA 0035, scheduled to arrive in Chennai at half past three on Tuesday morning, was one of them.

An airport official said around half of the 200 missing bags arrived on a later flight on Tuesday, but more than 100 passengers will have to wait until Wednesday to get their bags. “Many of the bags arrived in Chennai today, and our teams are working overtime to ensure that the rest will follow tonight,” an airline spokesperson said.

A small silver lining for the passengers was that last week, the Government paved the way for passengers receiving greater compensation for damaged or misplaced bags by passing the Carriage of Amendment Bill. By doing so, India will be ratifying the terms of the Montreal Convention for international carriage, which seeks to increase the compensation levels for passengers in the event of death, injury or damaged bags.

Compensation for damaged bags will increase from the current $20 or Rs.800 per kilogram to $1400 or Rs.56,000.

“Many countries have made the convention into law, and it was about time we did too,” said D. Sudhakara Reddy, President, Air Passengers’ Association of India. “The Act will substantially benefit passengers as it has significantly increased the compensation for loss of baggage.”

The Convention will also increase compensation due to death or bodily injury by seven times, to $140,000 or Rs.56 lakh.
