Vijayawada girl found killed in Birmingham

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: Vempala Samrajya Jyothirmayi, a 23-year-old girl hailing from the city, is believed to have been beaten to death at her residence in Handsworth, Birmingham in the United Kingdom on Tuesday evening, according to information received by her parents here.

Jyothirmayi is pursuing MPH (Master of Public Health) course at the University of Wolverhampton.

Naga Saibaba and Naga Rajakumari – parents of Jyothirmayi – got a call from one of their daughter’s friends Ramesh at 2.30 a.m. on Wednesday that Jyothirmayi was beaten to death by a black person outside the house in which she was residing along with five other girls as paying guests.

Despite several efforts, the girl’s parents could not get any information pertaining to the incident and they sought the help of Police Commissioner K.V. Rajendranath Reddy to get the news confirmed. The police, in turn, sent a requisition to the British Embassy.

A pall of gloom descended on the three-room rented house of Saibaba in Lambadipet on Wednesday morning, as many relatives and friends reached there to console the aged couple.

Jyothirmayi, the elder daughter of Saibaba, completed her graduation in physiotherapy (BPT) from a city-based college and left for Birmingham in September last to pursue Masters course. Saibaba, who distributed films till some time ago, is now running a petty business.

“What we heard over telephone was that a dark-complexioned man knocked on the door of my daughter’s house yesterday evening. When she opened the door, the man hit her on her head with a rod and also injured one of her roommates,” Saibaba said.

YSR’s directive

Chief Minister Y. S.Rajasekhara Reddy has directed Chief Secretary to contact the Indian High Commissioner’s office in London and make arrangements to get the body to Andhra Pradesh. He asked Vijayawada City Police Commissioner and Krishna district Collector to provide all assistance to the bereaved family.
