Says goonda Act diluted to help criminals ‘Police being controlled by external forces’ KOCHI: Kerala has become a haven for criminals under the Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala has said. Inaugurating the delegate session of the district meeting of the party here on Wednesday, Mr. Chennithala said the government was giving all support to the criminals and was even patronising them. It also diluted the goonda Act enacted by the United Democratic Front (UDF) government in favour of the criminals. There existed an “unholy nexus” between the goondas, criminal gangs and the CPI(M) leaders, he said. Though Kodiyeri Balakrishnan holds the portfolio of Home and Tourism, he was acting as the Minister for Tourism alone and the police were controlled by external forces. Courts had also passed several strictures against the police for the tardy investigation of cases, Mr. Chennithala alleged. Peaceful life had become impossible in the State with criminals attacking people and looting houses and business establishments. The price rise of essential commodities had also made life difficult in the State, Mr. Chennithala said. The KPCC president urged the Chief Minister to come out with a White Paper on the restoration of government land that was encroached upon by interested parties at various places in the State. It was the CPI(M) and the CPI party men who encroached upon large tracts of land at Munnar and Idukki, he said. DCC president V.J. Poulose presided. Senior Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran delivered the keynote address. Congress leaders K.V. Thomas, K. Babu and V.D. Satheesan, MLAs, P.P. Thankachan, Dominic Presentation, K.P. Dhanapalan, Thalekunnil Basheer, K. Muhamadali, P.C. Chacko, G. Karthikeyan, A.C. Jose, Benny Behannan, T.P. Hassan, Ajay Tharayil, M.I. Shanavas, P.J. Joy. N. Venugopal and Simi Rosebel John were among those who attended. DCC general secretary M. Premachandran welcomed the gathering.
