Ramar Sethu issue

This refers to the former Attorney-General, K. Parasaran’s argument in the Supreme Court that breaking Ramar Sethu will leave a permanent scar on Indian secularism like the Babri Masjid demolition did (May 7). Like most Indians, I too respect the religious sentiments of others but have a question. Will those who support Mr. Parasaran’s claim agree that the demolition of the Babri Masjid is a scar on the nation? Will they, then, agree to remove the scar by rebuilding the mosque in its original place?

D. Darwin Albert Raj,

By arguing the Ramar Sethu project from a religious point of view, we are unconsciously playing into the hands of religious organisations. To compare it with the Babri Masjid may not be quite appropriate. The Babri Masjid, belonging to the minority community, did not get the protection it deserved and was demolished by kar sevaks. That was against the principles of secularism which, in my view, would mean the majority community protecting the interests of the minorities.

It is sad and hurting that some sections are trying to destroy the Ramar Sethu saying it needs to be cut into for completion of the Sethusamudram project. They have alleged that the Sethu is not man made. When the Aswan dam was constructed on the Nile, the Egyptians took extreme care not to disturb the Sphinx. Similarly, if the authorities are still keen on the shipping canal project, they can evolve an alternative alignment.

C.V. Subramaniam,

Bangalore
