LONDON: Irish Premier Bertie Ahern officially resigned on Tuesday after 11 years as Taoiseach (Prime Minister). He will be succeeded by Tanaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) Brian Cowen on Wednesday. Mr. Ahern announced his resignation early last month amid mounting pressure over his personal finances, which are being investigated. — Xinhua
