NEW DELHI: A seven-member all-woman athletics team is scheduled to leave for Ukraine by May 10 in order to prepare for the Olympic Games during a month-long camp. The squad comprises five 400m runners who are being groomed for the longer relay, Manjeet Kaur, Mandeep Kaur, Chitra Soman, Sini Jose and M.R. Poovamma, discus thrower Seema Antil and heptathlete J. J. Shobha. With timings in recent meets remaining below the ordinary, the relay team will have a tough task of making the top-16 bracket in the world in order to qualify. Its main attempts towards qualification will come during the Asian Grand Prix meets in the last week of June. Seema Antil, who in 2004, in Kiev, registered a mark of 64.84 metres in discus that was never ratified as the national record for want of certified data (her record stands at 64.64m). She has to aim for a better mark than the one achieved by Krishna Poonia (59.04) in the U.S. recently. If both have to make it, they will need 61.0 metres. Individual qualification deadline is July 23 while that for the relay is July 16.
