CHENNAI: Pavitra Rao (38), silver medallist for India in the Asian rowing championship in Chandigarh in 1989 and the Asian Games in Beijing in 1990, died in a road accident on May 1 while holidaying in Kimberley, South Africa.

A leading member of the Tamil Nadu and Indian teams in the early ’90s, Pavitra was among the four who received the ‘best State team award’ presented by the Tamil Nadu Sports Journalists Association (TNSJA) in 1991.

She also represented Madras in the inter-University basketball championship in 1988 and 1989.

Pavitra was the daughter of former State, South Zone cricketer and administrator, U. Prabhakar Rao. — Special Correspondent
