BTM Layout has a variety of problems

BANGALORE: Rapid development in areas such as Koramangala and BTM Layout in BTM Layout Assembly Constituency offers a contradicting picture to other areas such as Ejipura and Venkatapura, which remain an island of under-development in the constituency.

Having a mix of developed and under-developed areas, the newly created BTM Layout constituency has been carved out of the erstwhile Uttarahalli constituency, and partly from Jayanagar and Shanthinagar constituencies.

With 2.12 lakh voters, the constituency has BTM Layout, Koramangala, Jakkasandra, Lakksandra, Madiwala, Venkatapura, Ejipura, Adugodi, Saddugunte Palya, Bharathinagar and other areas.

Housing a large number of information technology companies, Koramangala and BTM Layout suffer from chaotic traffic, though BTM Layout alone has three flyovers.

While low-lying areas, including Madiwala, Ejipura and parts of BTM Layout, are prone to water logging during monsoon, many areas in Koramangala face water problems.

The four-time MLA from Jayanagar and former Minister Ramalinga Reddy is the Congress candidate, and is pitted against the first timer and BJP candidate G. Prasad Reddy, who is the richest candidate in the fray with declared assets of Rs. 313 crore. Incidentally, Prasad Reddy, in his campaign material, has claimed to be a relative of the first Chief Minister of Karnataka late K.C. Reddy.

“Apart from resolving ownership issues of the slum dwellers, addressing the water problem in the area and installing skywalks near Forum Mall and Jayadeva Hospital are on the agenda,” Mr. Prasad Reddy says.

The Lok Paritran candidate Prabhakara Honnalli, who has taken a long leave from his company to contest in the elections, said: “Issues of Sakrama and CVS are bothering the BDA layouts while Venkatapura and Koramangala have irrergular water supply. Ejipura and Madiwala are affected by floods during rainy season.”

Improving the quality of government schools and hospitals in the areas should also be taken on priority basis, he added.
