Tree felling sparks protest

HYDERABAD: The Forum For a Better Hyderabad, WWF and several voluntary associations took out a protest rally here on Wednesday against the felling of centuries old banyan tree in front of Paigah Palace, old office of HUDA, now temporarily housing the US Consulate.
The Forum president M. Vedakumar said the 200-year-old huge banyan tree, along with 32 Asoka trees, were cut down at the request of US Consulate by GHMC authorities to facilitate road widening. he Forum demanded an independent fact finding inquiry by some eminent persons to find out as to who had arranged the felling of the tree, whether permission was obtained from the authorities concerned and whether any alternative plan was considered by the GHMC to save the tree.
