Guntur
All smiles: Rayapati Srinivas, MLC and father of Mayor Rayapati Mohan Sai Krishna, greets his son on the latter’s first day in office. Guntur-I MLA Nambur Shaik Subhani and his son Deputy Mayor Shaik Ghouse are also seen. GUNTUR: Flowers and flowers and more flowers greeted Mayor Rayapati Mohan Sai Krishna on the first day in office and eventually his small chamber turned into one of flowers within an hour. People vied with one another to greet the new Mayor and ensured that they got photographed with him. A major rally of motorcycles brought the Mayor to the GMC administrative building. His deputy Shaik Ghouse accompanied him, but chose to sit in his cabin on May 9, the auspicious day, though both Mayor and Deputy Mayor were officially sworn in on Saturday. There was a beeline of youth, women, corporators and Congress leaders to greet him on the first day in office. Municipal commissioner Siddhartha Jain, Members of Legislative Assembly Rayapati Srinivas (Krishna’s father) and K.S. Lakshman Rao were among those present on the occasion in addition to the Guntur-I MLA Nambur Shaik Subhani. In his formal address to the mediapersons the Mayor said he would give priority to identification of vacant lands and getting them filled with constructions or making the owners pay Vacant Land Tax. Child labour was another social evil that he was interested in eradicating.
