Awaiting relocation: The parlour near MEPZ SEZ in Tambaram.

TAMBARAM: With summer reaching its peak, temporary and mobile juice shops are springing up in every nook and corner.. But a government refreshment parlour has been closed in Tambaram Sanatorium, reportedly owing to poor patronage and unsafe surroundings.

The Aavin parlour near Madras Export Processing Zone – Special Economic Zone was closed down about six months ago. Though it was a favourite spot for the residents to purchase the popular brand of Aavin’s flavoured milk, curd, yogurt, khoa and hot milk, government officials said that sales were poor and hence they decided to close it down.

Further, on a couple of occasions, stock was burgled that was another reason to close the shop, a senior official of Aavin said.

An East Tambaram resident said that there were many private stores selling Aavin products. But, this was the only exclusive outlet in the region.

This was the only place where they could buy the most sought after ‘hot milk,’ dates, khoa, buttermilk and flavoured milk, especially during summer. The residents said that with the MEPZ, the National Institute of Siddha, the taluk office and other government establishments in the vicinity, the scope for sales was high.

The officials said that between Guindy and Tambaram, the outlet near MEPZ SEZ was the only exclusive parlour that stocked all the popular products of Aavin. They said that the parlour was functioning from a cramped booth at a location, which was not ideal.

They had already initiated steps to revive it, the officials said, adding that a bigger parlour in a better location in the vicinity would be opened shortly.
