Ferrero shocks Nadal

ROME: Former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero stunned Rafael Nadal 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of the Rome Masters tennis here on Wednesday.

From the end of a tight first set Nadal struggled with blisters on his right foot and with his movement clearly hampered, he could put up little of a fight in the second.

It was the three-time French Open champion’s first defeat on clay since the final at Hamburg last year, when a stunning performance from Roger Federer dealt him a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 reverse.

It was also Nadal’s first ever defeat here in Rome, having lifted the title on his previous three visits over the last three years.

Ferrero had never previously beaten Nadal on clay but this took his overall record against the World No. 2 to 2-6 and 1-4 on clay.

Ivanovic advances

Defending champion Ana Ivanovic overcame a slow start on Wednesday to beat Uzbek qualifier Akgul Amanmuradova 7-6 (0), 6-2 and reach the round of 16 at the German Open.
