Indian girls lose to Australia

NEW DELHI: Australia defeated India 2-1 in the last league match in group ‘C’ of the Asia-Oceania junior Fed Cup under-16 girls’ tennis tournament in Bangkok on Wednesday.

Rishika Sunkara and Rashmi Teltumbe lost the decisive doubles in the match which meant that India finished second in the group. Rashmi had earlier fought hard for two hours and 35 minutes in winning her singles match against Olivia Rich in three sets.

In the quarterfinals, fifth-seeded India will meet eighth-seeded China, which topped its group ahead of Thailand. In the other quarterfinals, Uzbekistan will take on Thailand, Chinese Taipei will clash with Australia and Korea will meet Japan.

The results: Australia beat India 2-1 (Monika Wejnert bt Rishika Sunkara 7-6(3), 6-2; Olivia Rich lost to Rashmi Teltumbe 5-7, 6-4, 2-6; Olivia and Mia Vriens bt Rishika Sunkara and Rashmi Teltumbe 6-3, 6-3).
