BHUBANESWAR: Kathak exponent and secretary of the New Delhi-based Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA), the National Academy of Performing Arts Jayant Kastuar was conferred the coveted Tala Vadya Samman-2008 during the seventh annual ‘Tala-Vadya Utsav’ mounted by the Mardal Academy here on Wednesday. Industries and Law Minister B.B. Harichandan presented the honour. The award, instituted by the Mardal Academy, is being presented to a pioneering personality in the field of performing arts. Legendary Odissi guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Odissi music exponent Kasinath Pujapanda and eminent Odissi danseuse Minati Mishra were the past recipients of the honour. In his inaugural address, the SNA secretary assured to extend adequate support for promotion of the Odissi mardal, the indigenous percussion instrument of Orissa, at the national level. He further urged upon Akademi awardee mardal exponent and the Mardal Academy founder Guru Banamali Moharana to introduce higher-level training at the Academy under the guru-shishya parampara scheme of the Culture Ministry. Akademi awardee Odissi exponent Minati Mishra and Odissi Research Centre chief executive Ramahari Das addressed the gathering.
