PUDUCHERRY: Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy told the Assembly on Tuesday that Adi Dravidars belonging to the below-the-poverty-line (BPL) category would receive free colour television sets, besides getting 25 per cent subsidy on liquefied petroleum gas cylinders. Replying to the debate on demands, he said that under the Special Component Plan, 10,000 Adi Dravidar BPL families would receive the gas connection every year. “The grant of Rs.one lakh for Adi Dravidars for the construction of houses will be increased to Rs. two lakh under the Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi House Construction Scheme,” he said. The government would pay the entire educational expenses for Adi Dravidar students enrolling in medical and enginee ring streams. He said that the marriage assistance scheme for Adi Dravidar women would be increased from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000. Similarly, assistance towards final rites would be increased from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 5,000.
