Kudumbasree to make foray into industrial sector

Initial venture is cashew processing

Mission to start procurement centres


KASARAGOD: The Kudumbasree Mission is finalising projects to develop industries based on coconut, cashew nut and cashew apple, dairy products and mussel in the district over a period of four years to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the formation of the movement.

District mission coordinator M.K. Rajasekharan, who announced this at a press conference here on Thursday, said the total investment in those sectors would be to the tune of Rs.123 crore. The mission’s initial venture would be in cashew processing, he said. The estimated cost of the proposed venture would be Rs.40 crore, he said.

As part of the initiative, the mission would start procurement centres and manufacture value-added products from cashew nut and cashew apple, he said. He revealed that the mission planned to open five industrial units in the cashew sector. The project has been almost finalised and the details would be announced soon, Mr. Rajasekharan said.

He said the mission had almost finalised a project for the development of dairy sector in the district also. A laboratory for testing products is also likely to come up in the district. The mission will also set up a marketing system for marketing the products of its industrials units and efforts were on to market the products on a common brand name, said officials of the Kudumbasree mission.

Meanwhile, the mission is also organising various programmes to extend its activities to northern parts of the district also in connection with the 10th anniversary of formation. A review meeting of the district mission will be held at Kasaragod Government College auditorium at 10 a.m. on May 18. Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac and executive director of the mission Sarada Muraleedharan are expected to participate in the meeting.

A seminar on the possibilities and limitations of micro finance will be held at Kanhangad on May 21. P. Karunakaran, MP, will inaugurate the seminar.
