Politicians and retirement talk
Why do politicians talk of bidding adieu to politics when elections are round the corner? Why do they become emotional in front of voters? Is it their age that makes politicians talk of retirement plans? But when politicians who have crossed 70 are still active, why should those who have not yet touched 60 talk of retirement?
Congressman and former Minister H. Vishwanath was the first to say: “I will retire from politics after this election.” Mr. Vishwanath, who is contesting from K.R. Nagar, said: “It is better to say goodbye at the age of 65. If I am elected, my term will end when I turn 65. That’s the time when I will call it a day.”
When Congress leader Siddaramaiah spoke of retiring from active politics, during his election speech in Mysore on Saturday, his supporters were surprised.
“The thought just came to my mind, but my followers will have the final say on the issue,” clarified Mr. Siddaramaiah, who is contesting from Varuna.
Mr. Siddaramaiah surprised everyone at an election meeting when he turned emotional for giving up the Chamundeshwari constituency, his traditional seat.
