The terror of Champaran surrenders

BETTIAH (BIHAR): Bhagad Yadav, whose name spelt terror in the Champaran belt of Bihar, surrendered before the police on Thursday amid much fanfare in West Champaran district.

Superintendent of Police K. S. Anupam said Bhagad, carrying a cash reward of Rs.2 lakh on his head, gave himself up along with three members of his gang at the Bairiya police station on Thursday morning. They deposited one carbine, a rifle and a country-made gun besides several rounds of ammunition, she said.

Bhagad stood on a dais bedecked with flowers before 5,000-odd people where the police accepted his surrender.

“I don’t want my family members to face torture and harassment by police because of my involvement in crime. I want that they lead a better life and my son Ajay Yadav flourish well in politics,” he said addressing the gathering.

When contacted, I-G (Tirhut range) Krishna Choudhary said it was a success of police persuasion and other criminals must also follow suit.

Bhagad was wanted in connection with 109 criminal cases including murder, extortion and kidnapping after he joined a gang in 1984. The special operation “Black Panther” launched by the police against the bandits in Champaran in the early ‘80s had failed to trace Bhagad, who evaded arrest for over 25 years.

His son Ajay Yadav had unsuccessfully contested the Bihar Assembly election from Nautan in 2005 on RJD ticket. - PTI
