Clarification

A report “Official held for taking bribe” (Chennai City, May 6, page 8) said “officials of the anti-corruption branch of the CBI, Chennai, on Monday arrested M.C. Gupta, Deputy Registrar, Trademarks, Intellectual Property Rights Appellate Board, Chennai, on charges of demanding and taking bribe from an advocate. CBI authorities said advocate C. Daniel had approached Mr. Gupta for clearing his papers pertaining to trademark, which were pending with the official, who allegedly demanded and took Rs 10,000 for completing the work…”

The Intellectual Property Appellate Board (and not Intellectual Property Rights Appellate Board as was published) clarifies that the office of the Trade Marks is different from the office of the Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB). The IPAB is a quasi-judicial authority under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the government of India.
