225 held for sand quarrying in central districts

TIRUCHI: In a massive drive to check illegal quarrying of sand, the police took into custody 225 persons and seized equal number of vehicles and bullock carts in the central districts in the recent past.

Special police teams, which conducted a surveillance in and around banks of the rivers in these districts, booked as many as 225 cases. A fine amounting to Rs. 50,000 was collected from 220 offenders, following which the vehicles were released.

The raid was conducted on the direction of Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, Karan Singha and under the direct supervision of the Deputy Inspectors General Abash Kumar (Thanjavur Range) and Ashok Kumar Das (Tiruchi) and the Superintendents of Police of Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, an release on Thursday said.
