Kerala IITM systems for Nagaland varsity

Guwahati: The School of Engineering and Technology of Nagaland University has successfully installed and commissioned an Education Grid Gateway Systems (EGDS) developed by the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala(IITM-K).

The first advanced portable e-learning server was brought by a team from IITM-K and integrated with the Local Area Network (LAN) and Internet of the school at Dimapur. Using the server, the team commissioned 1,400 hours of recorded video lectures by academicians in their fields under the Human Resource Development Ministry-funded National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning(NPTEL), says a university release.

Packaged video courses

This is the first time NPTEL has sent packaged video courses to an institution in the country. A two-day hands-on workshop conducted by the IITM-K team concluded on Tuesday. The video lectures were packaged by the NPTEL team at IIT-Madras and sent to Nagland University for the workshop. The lectures, covering over 30 courses, are made available as a video-on-demand service over the network. The university has been working with IITM-K and NPTEL to groom its young teachers and enable them to provide quality education, says the release.

Education grid

Vice-Chancellor K. Kannan said the university would build a Nagaland Education Grid covering all villages so that every resident of the State who desired to pursue studies and who met prerequisites was provided facilities and opportunities.

IITM-K Director K.R. Srivathsan said the centre would serve as the nodal agency that built systems for Technology Enhanced Learning Teaching and Evaluation (TELTE). It would also provide facilities and attract any competent group of persons to establish and service education and training programmes.
