CPI(M) for including Tulu in Schedule VIII

MANGALORE: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will fight for the addition of Tulu in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Making this statement before presspersons in the city on Thursday, P. Karunakaran, MP, said major parties in the State had not taken up this issue with any seriousness.

The addition of the language in the Eighth Schedule would make it eligible for facilities from the Union Human Resource Development Ministry.

Tulu writers would be provide facilities by the Kendriya Sahitya Academy.

Mr. Karunakaran, who was here to campaign for the party’s candidate in the Mangalore South Assembly Constituency, said it was essential for the cultural identity of the people of the region for their language to be added to the schedule.

Slamming the BJP, the Congress and the Janata Dal (S), he said that none of the three parties were capable of securing a clear majority in the State.

He predicted the emergence of a third front where non-caste and non-communal parties would come together to change the State’s social landscape.

Mr. Maroli said he would take up the civic issues that were haunting the city for a long time.

“My priority will be to ensure that there is clean drinking water for all in addition to safe drainage,” he said.

He said that the electorate had given a chance to others and suffered the consequences.

Beedi workers’ support

At the event, the South Kanara Beedi Workers’ Federation pledged their support to Mr. Maroli and the CPI (M). Federation president Balakrishna Shetty said that only the Left parties had taken up the issue of beedi workers in the State.

Reacting to the allegations levelled by BJP candidate N. Yogish Bhat that the beedi workers were not being given the full Rs. 4,500 arrears, Mr. Shetty said, “he does not know anything about the issues concerning beedi workers and Rs. 900 is being deducted for contribution to Provident Fund.”
