Scholars urged to sensitise masses to values

TIRUCHI: Speakers at the 61st annual day of ‘Tiruthavathurai Araneri Kazhagam’ at Lalgudi near here underlined the importance of strict adherence to ethics and virtues codified in ancient religious texts and sacred books.

They said knowledgeable persons should play a key role in disseminating rich values enunciated in religious hymns and verses of the holy past.

Noted Tamil scholar and former principal of Urumu Dhanalakshmi College S. Sathyaseelan said that, with the deterioration of values among the humanity, it was high time that scholars took up the responsibility of achieving the goals of global prosperity by sensitising the masses to values.

Human race, by and large, underwent several ordeals in the current day lifestyle and the dissemination of value-based principles was the lone remedy to cure these ills, he added.

Poet S. Santhar, who spoke on ‘uvamaiyum unmaiyyum’, said the examples of several characters mentioned in the great scholars in ‘Naalayira Divya Prabandham’ was a rare literary treasure. A special documentation of alliterations and comparisons would be of much help in guiding the future generation towards the righteous path.

Sessions were held with titles such as ‘Natramizh Mutram’, ‘Paarattarangam’ and ‘Pozhivu Mayyam’.

Tiruchi Tamil Sangam president P. Mookapillai spoke on the high order of codes compiled by Tiruvalluvar one should follow for leading a purposeful life.

Pudukottai Kamban Kazhagam secretary T. S. Malaiyappan, who spoke of ‘poetic skills of Kachiappar’, delivered an interesting lecture to drive home the importance of poetry and its impact masses.

A faculty from the Tamil University, Thanjavur, Shanmuga Selva Ganapathi in his address on ‘Sekkizharin Kavi Isainayam’ explained the nuances of Tamil music and its unique features on several counts.

He also expressed concern over inadequate attention being attached to these values and underlined the importance of imparting Tamil literature with maximum utilisation of Tamil music.

Kazhagam founder G. Kanagasabai explained various activities undertaken by the Kazhagam.

Kazhagam patron V. Jayapal honoured a Tamil scholar Durai Namachivayam of Pudur Uthamanur with a title ‘Araneri Marumalarchi Sinthanaiyalar’. He commended Mr. Namachivayam’s hard work in achieving greater heights in his life.

In his acceptance address, Mr. Durai Namachivayam appealed to Tamil scholars to motivate the youths to follow the values contained in ancient hymns such as the one composed by Sri Abirami Bhattar.

Former headmistress of Srirangam Girls Higher Secondary School Sathyabama gave away prizes to the school students who won various competitions conducted by the Kazhagam.
