SHIMOGA: Superintendent of the District Prison Kariappa said here on Thursday that prisons should not be considered as a closed haven for criminals as they were centres of their reformation. He was speaking as the chief guest at the “Basava Tatva Sinchana” programme in the district jail, organised by the Rashtriya Basava Dal on the occasion of Basava Jayanti. It was wrong to think that minds could not be reformed in a confine within four walls, he said and added that criminals who were deserted by their family members could be transformed and brought into the mainstream by counselling them with moral and spiritual lessons. Mr. Kariappa said that the teachings of social reformer Basaveshwara would go a long way in bringing criminals on the right path. It was wrong to term all the inmates in jails as criminals as some of them might have committed crimes at the spur of moment under emotional stress and strain, he said. Mr. Kariappa said that it was disturbing to note that most of the inmates in jails were in the age group of 20 to 40. Journalist S. Chandrakanth inaugurated the programme. Chandrasekharappa and Mallappa of the Basava Dal and the former headmaster Ramappa were present. Mr. Mallappa welcomed the gathering.
