Bus stand, check-post must for Viralimalai

Chaotic: In the absence of a proper bus stand at Viralimalai, villagers struggle to travel in comfort. It also leads to traffic jams.

PUDUKOTTAI: The notification by the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, declaring Viralimalai as a heritage site, has created enough awareness among the members of the public in reiterating the basic amenities for the village.

The absence of a bus stand in the village has been cause of concern to the residents of a number of villagers in and around Viralimalai. Its strategic location on the Madurai–Tiruchi National Highway and, more importantly, its boundary bordering both Tiruchi and Pudukottai districts makes the village an important assembling place for a number of residents of both these districts to travel towards either Tiruchi or Pudukottai for their daily routine.

At any given point of time, a large number of villagers can be seen standing on the road waiting for the bus. As this town forms a vital link to towns such as Manapparai with agricultural wholesale markets in Tiruchi district, a large number of small traders and labourers also depend upon buses for their day-to-day schedule.

The absence of a bus stand in Viralimalai formed one of the key discussions at the Grama Sabha meeting held on May Day. Police sources in Viralimalai say that traffic management often proved a challenge, in the absence of a bus-stand. “A large number of top officials including judicial officers visiting Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple here are put to great inconvenience,” they say.

The precarious condition of the Police check-post in Viralimalai is yet another eye-sore. Local people dump waste materials beside it. Though it is bereft of adequate infrastructure facilities, police personnel have been utilising it in the night. Police sources say that there was a strong case for constructing a separate building for the check-post.
