Policemen on the warpath

Correspondent

They threaten to go on mass leave on July 12

CUTTACK: Claiming that their genuine demands are being repeatedly ignored, the 40,000 strong police force of Orissa has served an ultimatum to the State Government. At a joint meeting of Orissa Constables’ association and Orissa Police Association (OPA) held here recently, the two frontal organisations of the State Police have threatened to take one day mass casual leave (CL) on July 12, during the return car festival of Lord Jagannath.

The OPA consisting of some 6,000 officers in the rank of ASI, SI and inspectors have decided to wear black badges and perform their duties from June 1, if their demands are not met by this month-end. “If the Government still continues to ignore our demands then we will perform the famous Rath Yatra (Car festival) duty on July 4 by remaining empty stomach”, said the OPA president S.M. Sharma, a senior police inspector.

Earlier the constables’ association had also made a similar call. “If necessary then all the 40,000 policemen of the State would take one day mass casual leave on Bahuda Yatra (return car festival) on July 12”, said the office bearers of both the associations to the newsmen at a press conference held here.
