JAIPUR: BITSAT-2008, the online admission test for the Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses of BITS, begins this Friday and will be conducted till June 13 at 19 centres across India. In the first week of BITSAT-2008, nine stations -- Delhi (Punjabi Bagh), Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Chandigarh and Pilani — will have the tests. From next week, tests will be held at all the 19 listed centres. A record number of 1.17 lakh students have applied for BITSAT this time, an increase of 32 per cent over the previous year. There is also an increase of 4 per cent in the number of girl applicants. BITS Admission Test (BITSAT), a computer-based online admission test procedure, was introduced for the first time in India in 2005 by BITS Pilani. After rejecting the traditional style of pen and paper entrance examinations, BITS Pilani has been able to conduct this online test successfully since then to admit students for its campuses in Pilani and Goa. This year it has opened the admission to yet another campus -- BITS Pilani-Hyderabad Campus. A significant change this year is that students with Physics, Chemistry and Biology also have been allowed to appear for BITSAT-2008. They are eligible for the M.Sc. (Hons.), Biological Sciences and B.Pharm (Hons) programmes.
