Bomb detection system at airport

System to cost Rs. 50 lakh

NEDUMBASSERY: In the wake of growing security threats faced by the strategic installations in the country, the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is considering the proposal for setting up an active bomb detection system at the airport.

“We have already given orders for the purchase of equipment, including metal detectors. Nearly Rs.50 lakh is the expected cost for setting up this system,” said a senior official at the airport. He also said that the airport had been waiting for the approval of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and added that the equipment purchased should be according to the specifications of BCAS. A couple of weeks ago, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) set up by the CISF on a temporary basis was withdrawn from the airport. The trained personnel were deployed at other airports. There were also reports that the airport had to depend on the BDDS unit of the Kerala police at Thrippunithura in case of any emergency. The average reaction time calculated was at two hours.
