‘We will construct the slipway as promised’
Staff Correspondent
Manipal: Tebma Shipyards Ltd., a company that has a ship-building facility in Malpe, has said that it is committed to constructing a slipway in Malpe, as agreed between the company and the State Government.
The company’s clarification comes in the wake of a protest by the fishermen of Malpe on May 3 against Tebma’s ship-building activities. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, company director M.N. Kamath said that the Government had taken up the first stage of development of the Malpe fisheries port in 1975, and there was a provision to construct a slipway. As the work was not completed for over two decades, the Government in 1999 decided to invite private participation in the erection, commissioning, operation, maintenance and management of the facility for the construction and repair of various types of barges, dredgers and other vessels, he said and added that the Government had not yet released a 10-acre plot at Baputhotta for the project. The company had agreed to build a separate slipway, free of cost, adjacent to the shipyard, on land belonging to Fisheries and Ports Department, Mr. Kamath said.
