Honey-spinner: Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran taking a closer look at an exhibit at the festival of honey and mangoes at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium on Thursday. Thiruvananthapuram: Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran has stressed the need for a national network for the procurement and distribution of mangoes and honey. The Minister, who was inaugurating a national festival of honey and mangoes being organised jointly by the State Horticultural Mission and the Agriculture Department in the Chandrasekharan Nair here on Thursday, said that both the items were integral part of Malayali food once. Rare commodities nowThey were not easily available now. A well-equipped network was necessary if they were to be made readily available and an attempt for it should be made at the national level. He stated that model farms for raising all types of mangoes would be set up under the Agriculture Department and the Agricultural varsity. The Horticorp would raise saplings of mango varieties for distribution to the people. Quality honeyHe also underscored the need for equipping the bee farmers of Kerala for producing honey of high quality which was in demand in the country and abroad. Pannyan Ravindran, MP, presided over the function. The exhibition and sale of various varieties of honey and mangoes and value-added products made from them will continue till May 13.
