A portion of the stomach was removed through the mouth COIMBATORE: Gem Hospital here has removed a portion of a woman’s stomach through her mouth in an endoscopy surgery. Called sleeve gastrectomy, the procedure was done on a 37-year-old woman to provide a cure from obesity. Director of the hospital C. Palanivelu, who performed the surgery, said in a press release that obesity surgery normally involved the removal of a portion of the stomach through an incision in the abdominal wall. Since the patient was diabetic and had hypertension, there was the risk of infection from the surgical wound. An obese, diabetic person with a bulky abdominal wall was prone to this risk. Therefore, it was decided to bring out the removed portion of the stomach through the mouth by using an endoscope. Dr. Palanivelu said the Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery that accessed affected areas through natural openings such as mouth and vagina was becoming popular.
