LUCKY START: Marcus Diepen Boominathan makes the first transaction at the ATM of Punjab National Bank on Thursday. —

TIRUCHI: The 200-odd extension counters of Punjab National Bank would be upgraded into full-fledged bank branches and all the branches across the country would be computerised by the next financial year, Deputy General Manager and Circle Head of the bank, Tiruchi Circle, Malathi Mohan said.

Speaking at the function held to mark the inauguration of automated teller machine (ATM) service at Bishop Heber College on Thursday, Ms. Mohan said of the 4,700-odd branches, nearly 3,650 branches were computerised so far, and the remaining would also be automated to facilitate easy and quick transaction.

With its extensive network at urban and rural areas, the bank was the one among the largest public sector banks with widest pan-Asia service set-up.

Changing needs of people has pushed banks towards fast-paced services through maximum utilisation of technology. Despite stiff competition from private banks, public-sector banks enjoyed a sustained patronage by virtue of their foray into rural areas. Transaction costs incurred by the customers and the bank have drastically come down with the introduction of automated services, she said.

Bishop of Tiruchi-Thanjavur Diocese Rt. Rev. G. Paul Vasanthakumar commissioned the ATM and Principal of Bishop Heber College M. Marcus Diepen Boominathan made the first transaction.

Bank’s Branch Manager R. Thambithurai and former assistant general manager R. Sathyamoorthy spoke.
