PWD officials have started releasing 100 cusecs for Chithirai festival being celebrated at Sri Gowmariamman Temple THENI: The level in Periyar dam has been inching slowly towards the prescribed total storage capacity of 136 feet, following sharp summer showers on Wednesday. The level in the dam stood at 133.11 feet on Thursday and the total storage was 5,399 mcft. The dam has been receiving 100 cusecs since Wednesday evening. Public Works Department officials have started releasing 100 cusecs from the dam for the annual Chithirai festival being celebrated at Sri Gowmariamman Temple at Veerapandi, eight km away from Theni. Water release was stopped last month to start construction of head works for the much-awaited 18th Canal scheme. Construction work in the power plant at Lower Camp is also in full swing. However, there was no rain in the dam site. The storage level remained static at Vaigai dam. But inflow into the dam has been increased to 113 cusecs from a mere 21 cusecs on Tuesday. Discharge from the dam was 41 cusecs for drinking water supply to Madurai. The dam has 70.7 feet of water. Total storage in the dam was 6,013 mcft. Shanmugha river dam received the highest amount of rainfall in the district. There was no rain in several parts of the district. Rainfall recorded at various places in Theni district (in mm): Thekkadi 7, Gudalur 6.4, Shanmuga River 11, Veerapandi 5 and Vaigai dam 7. DindigulDindigul received the highest amount of rainfall in the district while it was scanty in other parts. Kodaikanal and lower Palani hills also received moderate showers. The sky was overcast over Kodaikanal. With sufficient storage in irrigation wells and dams, farmers will not find any difficulty in starting preliminary work for cultivation of grains and oil seeds. By this month-end, they will start sowing groundnut and sunflower, said an agriculture officer. Rainfall recorded at various place in the district: Dindigul 15.5, Oddanchatram 6.5, Palani 2, Vedasandur 2, Vedasandur Tobacco Research Station 2 and Kodaikanal 2.
