‘Occultation’ of Mars by Moon on May 10

TIRUNELVELI: An ‘occultation’ of Mars by Moon will be visible in India on May 10 (Saturday.)

The District Science Officer, R. Gopalakrishna, in a statement said that when Moon or some other planet hides another from the view, it is called ‘occultation’.

This spectacular event will occur on May 10 between 7.50 p.m. and 9 p.m., when the ‘red planet’, Mars, hides behind the Moon and reappears after an hour.

An earlier occultation of Mars by Moon that was visible in India on April 14, 2007.

Arrangements at Kokkirakulam

A special sky observation through telescope will be organised at the District Science Centre at Kokkirakulam, Tirunelveli on May 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and interested public can witness the same.

The programme is subject to clearance of the sky, Mr. Gopalakrishna said.
