VILLUPURAM: An official probe has been ordered into the complaints of land grabbing from the poor and marginal farmers through fraudulent means in Tindivanam taluk. District Collector Brajendra Navnit told The Hindu that he received petitions about a week ago and had immediately ordered an official probe by a team headed by the District Registrar. It would check the veracity of the complaints and go into the transactions all over the district within a timeframe. According to sources, a ‘gang’ appeared to be operating in Tindivanam taluk to grab land from farmers. At least a dozen farmers had lost about 50 acres to the unscrupulous elements False documentsThe tricksters would get the survey numbers of the lands and prepare false documents as if they had obtained general power of attorney over the property. Later, they would sell the land to unsuspecting buyers and get the documents registered. It came to light recently when T. Amutha of Peramandur went to pay property tax to the Village Administrative Officer. She was told that her land, measuring 1.36 acres, had been sold to a private company on September 19, 2006 through a “forged power of attorney.” Similar complaints have been coming from the farmers in Muttiyur, Muppuli, Singanur and the nearby areas. Mr. Nanvit said that the transactions would be complete only after getting the patta transfer in the name of the buyers. The patta transfer would be effected after verification by the designated officials such as the deputy tahsildars, VAOs and surveyors. If the patta transfer had taken place in the impugned transactions, it could be termed fraudulent, and if not, the real owners need not worry. Many were under the impression that once the sale deed was registered the process was complete. After the registration the Sub-Registrar Office would issue an order within 45 days stating whether the registration was accepted or not.
