Udhagamandalam: A consistent performer in the Plus two examinations, the Coonoor based Stanes Higher Secondary School has outdone itself this year.

Normally being used to produce the district topper, the school has walked away with the top three prizes in the 2008 Higher Secondary examinations.

While S.Gokulakrishnan emerged as the district topper with 1,167 marks, he was followed by his school mates M .Suganthinishree who secured 1,149 marks and N.Suganesh who got 1,148.

Displaying modesty despite the significant performance of his institution, the Principal of the Stanes Higher Secondary School, Lewalyn Xavier, told The Hindu, “The entire credit goes to my staff.”

Pointing out that excellent team work had done the trick, he said, “Our staff go out of the way to bring out the best in our students.”

Stating that his ambition was to become a doctor, Gokulakrishnan, son of an employee of the Tamil Nadu Tea Plantation Corporation hailing from Madithorai village, said that topping the district had come as a pleasant surprise to him and added that his teachers, parents and friends had been pillars of strength.

Suganthinishree, daughter of a former employee of the Electricity Board said, “I was aiming for the top but am happy with what I got.”

She too wanted to become a doctor.

Suganesh thanked his teachers who had helped him score high marks and expressed the hope that he would get into medicine.

The Nilgiris Collector Anandrao V.Patil invited the district toppers to his office and shared their joy by distributing sweets.

According to official sources, out of 6,457 persons including 3,499 girls who appeared for the examinations, 5,212 got through. The district average was 81 percent.
