Mark sheets to be distributed at the schools in a week Department may plan special coaching classes PUDUCHERRY: With the overall pass percentage for the Standard XII examinations for schools in Puducherry and Karaikal decreasing by 4.03 this year, Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan said on Friday that steps to improve the performance of the students would be taken immediately. Announcing the Plus-Two results here, he said that an overall pass percentage of 76.63 was registered for government and private schools in Puducherry and Karaikal compared to 80.66 per cent last year. Out of the total 10,922 students (5,128 boys and 5,794 girls) who appeared for the examinations, 8,369 passed (3,732 boys and 4,637 girls) from the two regions. In Puducherry alone, a total of 9,207 students appeared for the examination of which 6,989 passed, securing 75.91 per cent. In 2006-2007, the pass percentage in the region was 80.22. Government and private schools in Karaikal achieved 80.47 pass percentage, a drop by 2.64 per cent from last year. As many as 1,380 students passed out of the total 1,715 from Karaikal. “We will soon hold discussions with Education Department officials and organise meetings with principals and teachers of each school to find out the reason for the decrease in pass percentage. Our aim is to achieve 100 per cent results,” the Minister told reporters. The department would look into the possibilities of conducting special coaching classes for the students. “We will take steps to achieve a higher pass percentage next year,” Mr. Shahjahan said. The mark sheets would be distributed at the schools in a week and the dates for supplementary exams would be announced later, he added. Top rank holdersAmong government and private schools in Puducherry and Karaikal, Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School, Puducherry, secured the first three State ranks. R. Shri Varthan of the school secured 1,183 marks out of 1,200 and bagged the first rank. A. Mohamed Ibrahime Asif obtained the second rank with 1,178 marks. The third rank was shared by three students who scored 1,174 marks each – S. Balaji of Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School, J. Jamal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School and S. Dhanalakshmi of St. Patrick Higher Secondary School. Among government schools in the two regions, S. Arvind of Thanthai Periyar Government Higher Secondary School, Kovilpathu, Karaikal, bagged the first rank with 1,171 marks. S. Venkataramanan and E. Aravindan of the same school secured the second and third ranks respectively with 1,168 and 1,159 marks. A. Dharani Priya (1,136 marks) of Thiruvalluvar Government Girls Higher Secondary School, M. Sumithra (1,118 marks) of Government Girls Higher Secondary School and D. Uvarani (1,112) of Thiruvalluvar Government Girls Higher Secondary School bagged the first three ranks among government schools in Puducherry. Girls outscore boysWhile boys bagged the State ranks this time, the overall pass percentage of girls was much higher at 80.03. The pass percentage of boys was 72.78 for Puducherry and Karaikal. 100 % passEleven schools, all in the private sector, recorded 100 per cent pass percentage including Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School, Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School, St. Joseph of Cluny Girls Higher Secondary School, St. Patrick Higher Secondary School and Seventh-Day Adventist Higher Secondary School.
