Centre for bioinformatics to be a department

Thiruvananthapuram: The Centre for Bioinformatics of the University of Kerala will soon be elevated to a teaching and research department, university Vice-Chancellor M.K. Ramachandran Nair has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the M.Sc. computational biology course of the centre at Karyavattom on Friday, a press note issued here said.

Within a short period, the centre was able to get financial assistance to the tune of Rs.1.5 crore from various agencies, including the University Grants Commission (UGC). This was a big achievement and a recognition of the effective handling of frontline areas of study, Mr. Nair said.

The course was started at the centre with assistance from the UGC as part of the latter’s Innovative Programme scheme.
