Police stations yet to shift to new premises

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: Even a year after the construction of the new police stations at Mangalam and Sederapet, they have not become functional.

The Mangalam and Sederapet outposts were upgraded as police stations in March 2007 by a Government Order. Much before the notification, the construction work for the station buildings was completed at the cost of Rs. 91.53 lakh.

As many as 24 additional posts were created for the new stations and even equipment for Common Integrated Police Application, a multilingual application to automate criminal procedures, were put up in the building, sources in the Police Department said.

Citing the inauguration of the new building for the Mettupalyam police station, the construction for which was taken up a few months ago, on May 7, the policemen attached to the outposts said that the government had adopted “a step-motherly” approach. They said the government had turned a blind eye to their repeated plea to shift the Mangalam and Sederapet outposts to the new premises at the earliest. “We don’t know why the government hesitates to shift the premises. The work was over a year ago,” a policeman working at the Sederapet outpost said.

The old building at Sederapet had developed cracks and it did not have enough space for the staff to take rest during night hours. “During rain, we have to move the files and papers to safer place to avoid getting drenched. We also live under constant threat of poisonous snakes,” the person added.
