KOCHI: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy will inaugurate a meet to protect the Periyar River at Eloor here on Saturday. A press release issued by the organisers said that Rajaji Mathew Thomas, MLA, will deliver the keynote address on the occasion. Environmentalists have demanded that the government should immediately launch a Periyar river protection authority to save the river from extinction. They have also urged the authorities to implement the free drinking water supply programme and health insurance scheme for people affected by indiscriminate pollution in Eloor. ‘Restructure PCB’Environmentalists have also called for re-structuring of the State Pollution Control Board. They have also requested the government to remove the Chairman of the board for his failure in checking pollution of the Periyar.
