Delhi Mayor accused of not demanding general amensty

NEW DELHI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, J. K. Sharma, has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of “misleading” people by adopting “blatant double standards, political opportunism and deliberately creating confusion”.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, the senior Congress leader alleged that “corrupt” civic body officials were holding citizens at ransom by practising harassment measures in the garb of the ongoing sealing drive in the Capital.

“Despite acute problems faced by the public, the Mayor did not even raise the demand for a general amnesty scheme in her letter to the Union Urban Development Minister. Misleading the people has become a habit with the BJP as they believe in saying one thing and doing another,” he charged.

Mr. Sharma also accused Mayor Arti Mehra to be totally unaware of ground realities when she chose to demand only 20 square metre shops in Delhi Development Authority flats.

MCD officials

Mr. Sharma also criticised the Mayor’s demand of allowing “chhajjas” up to 0.91 metre. “The demand was clearly aimed at providing MCD officials with yet another opportunity of harassing and fleecing poor people in the name of approving their chhajjas,” he added.
