Man acquitted in 22-year-old rape case

New Delhi: A local court has acquitted a man charged with raping a woman 22 years ago by pointing out contradictions in witnesses’ version.

“There are serious contradictions about the time of the incident. This is not a minor contradiction rather the testimonies regarding the time of offence are so contradictory that the same cannot be reconciled,” Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar said.

Absolving accused Arun Kumar Bhattacharya alias Arun Bengali of the charges, the court recently said the investigation could not find sufficient evidence against him.

It said that the victim had testified that the accused raped her at about 11.30 pm whereas her daughter said that the incident took place at about 3 pm.

The case was registered with Delhi Cantt police station here on July 11, 1986 on the allegation of the victim, who was a mother of four daughters and a son.
