KOLLAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said here on Friday that during the past two years of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule, 252 farmers had committed suicide in the State. Three among them at Kuttanad took the extreme step owing to the intransigence of the CPI(M), he alleged. Mr. Chandy said these suicides had demolished Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan’s claim at a press conference two years ago, soon after assuming office, that there would be no more farmer suicides in the State. Mr. Chandy was inaugurating a debate series organised by the Kollam Press Club marking the second anniversary of the Achuthanandan Cabinet. ‘Performance of the LDF government’ is the topic.
